MARKET MATCH PROGRAM

LOCALLY GROWN FOOD IS A RIGHT FOR ALL, NOT A LUXURY FOR JUST A FEW.

In 2010, with funding and technical support from Roots of Change, the Market Match Program was implemented: California’s nutrition incentive program for low-income farm-direct shoppers. When this program commenced, it provided customers spending SNAP and Calfresh (formerly called Food Stamp) benefits at our farmers’ market with $2 in Market Match for every $5 they spent per market day, up to $10 in extra funds.

In 2015, as a member of the California Market Match Consortium, SEE-LA, now Food Access LA, benefited from a multi-million dollar award from the federal Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentives (FINI) program and the newly established California Nutrition Incentives Program (CNIP). This award, along with funding from partners like Kaiser Permanente and Seeds of Change, has allowed Food Access LA to formalize and significantly expand its food access and equity activities and establish its Benefits and Incentives program.

Highlights of our work over the years include participation in the Fruit & Veggie Rx program, local advocacy for SNAP benefits acceptance to be required at all farmers’ markets in the City of LA, research partnership, the prioritization of WIC through incentives programs for WIC FMNP and CVB participants, and the more recent ARP Market Match expansion in partnership with the County of Los Angeles and several community partners.

We are committed to ensuring access to nutritious and locally grown food as a right for all, and not a luxury for just a few.
