What can I expect if I attend a nutrition and cooking class?
Our classes vary depending on programming and community needs. We offer FREE nutrition and cooking classes at select sites each year and provide classes in both English and Spanish. We welcome participants of all ages and encourage kids 5+ to join.
Peak of Season class, you will learn about:
Seasonal, California-grown fruits and vegetables’ nutrition and health benefits
How to purchase and prepare California-grown produce.
Each lesson includes take-home educational handouts, recipe cards, and recipe taste-testing opportunities. Adult lessons are 30 minutes and feature a recipe demonstration using a California-grown fruit or vegetable. Youth + Caregiver lessons are 60 minutes where participants work together to create a seasonal recipe. Both youth and adult participants will be asked to complete a quick survey at the beginning and end of each lesson.
CalFresh Healthy Living class, you will learn about:
MyPlate
Label reading
The benefits of fruits and vegetables
Food budgeting
Understanding sugars, fats, and salt.
Each lesson includes a food demonstration using fresh local produce from Food Access LA's farmers' markets. Classes offered at LA County parks also feature yoga or Zumba alongside nutrition classes. Classes vary in length from 30-90 minutes.
Do you provide nutrition and cooking classes for community-based sites or schools?
Yes, we are currently seeking interest from community-based organizations and Title 1 schools near our farmers' markets to provide our Peak of Season youth, caregiver, or adult classes! For community-based classes, partnering sites will be asked to provide Food Access LA with a list of anticipated participants. We require at least 10 participants per class, with a maximum of 15 for select sites. For more information, reach out to Leah Galitzdorfer, Program Manager.
